Headteachers, Do You Want to Teach Financial Literacy?
by Colne Life magazine
PCCU are providing money suitcases to schools
Dear Headteacher,
Do you want to prepare your children for the wider world of finance? Do you want to enhance your curriculum offer with an initiative to engage your children with reading whilst learning about money?
This is without cost to your school!
The money suitcase below will be provided for your school. The case is red (budget case!) and contains an age-appropriate book all about financial education, written by TV’s Dragon’s Den star, Deborah Meaden, a cuddly toy squirrel called Sammy (as we all need to squirrel pennies away!), an easy to understand explanation sheet, a book for the children to record what they have learnt and some delicious chocolate coins!
The suitcase can also be seen here.
So how will this work and where does the case come from?
Firstly, and importantly, there is no cost to your school. We are PCCU (Pennine Community Credit Union) who are a not for profit credit union have chosen to support the communities we serve with a £20,000 community donation. This year’s £20,000 donation will be dedicated to primary school children giving them a head start on financial education in a fun and friendly way.
“Our book suitcases are a huge success! Our children love taking the cases home and enjoy looking at the books with their grown-up!”
It is envisaged that each week, a different child is selected to take home the book suitcase to read with their parent or guardian (this is separate to their home reading book). They can cuddle with Sammy the squirrel and enjoy the chocolate coins whilst learning all about money.
We have been in close consultation with a Head Teacher at a local primary school who currently uses the book suitcase concept with different topics but believes the financial education suitcase could play an important role in the PSHE element in the school curriculum, helping young people understand money budgeting and wants and needs.
“Our book suitcases are a huge success! Our children love taking the cases home and enjoy looking at the books with their grown-up! We have seen reading levels increase as well as the children’s enthusiasm for reading. The financial suitcase will be a great asset to our PSHE ‘money matters’ curriculum and will educate our children about the basic concept of money, help them develop strong financial habits and learn the difference between wants and needs, in a fun and exciting way. We can’t wait to start using it!” – Mrs. Nicholls, Worsthorne Primary School
I fully believe that this project will allow PCCU the opportunity to promote financial education to our children, families and the wider community and hope you do too.
