Colne Dressers Club: Live and Social
by Colne Life magazine
A welcoming space for all
For over a century, the Colne Dressers Club has been a cornerstone of community life in Colne. We speak to club secretary Lee Turbitt about this inclusive venue, which was initially established as a social hub for warp dressers—skilled textile workers who prepared threads for weaving. The club has evolved into a modern, inclusive venue that continues to bring people together.
“During renovations, a member found old newspaper clippings from the 1890s in our attic. Back then, workers came in to do business downstairs, pick up their wages, and then head upstairs for a drink.” While the textile industry may have faded, the spirit of camaraderie lives on.
“WE’RE HERE TO PROVIDE A SAFE, WELCOMING SPACE FOR EVERYONE”
Today, the club is open to all, with membership costing just £12 a year. “Even if you’re not a member, you’re welcome,” Lee says. “But signing up gives you discounts on drinks and helps support everything we do.” Although the club’s roots lie in the working men’s tradition, it now welcomes everyone, regardless of gender, age, or background.
Inside, you’ll find more than just a pint. The club offers traditional pub games like snooker and darts, plus live sports on TV. Monthly live music nights spotlight some of the best local talent. “We’re proud to support homegrown bands,” Lee adds.
In August, Colne Dressers Club becomes a buzzing venue for the Great British Rhythm & Blues Festival. Acts like Heavy Bones and Standing Room Only take to the stage, while a second bar downstairs streams performances live, so you never miss a beat. Festivalgoers are encouraged to visit our Club as an official Fringe venue with a full line-up already established.
The club opens its doors on Thursdays, Fridays, and Sundays, making it an ideal pre-show stop before heading to the nearby Muni. Sundays are especially popular thanks to the weekly afternoon quiz—just £1 per person to join. “There’s always a good laugh,” Lee says. “Winners get beer tokens or cash, and sometimes someone buys a round for the whole room.”
Community is at the heart of everything Colne Dressers Club does. It hosts seasonal parties for Easter, Halloween, and Christmas, and offers a private function room for hire. “We’re here to provide a safe, welcoming space for everyone. Our values are built on diversity, inclusivity, and respect.”
The club’s drink selection caters to all tastes, including craft beers, alcohol-free options, and vegan and gluten-free choices. It’s no surprise it was recently crowned CAMRA East Lancashire Club of the Year 2025, for the second year in a row.
Since its founding in 1895, the Colne Dressers Club, sponsored by CAMRA and Pendle Trail Running Club, shows no signs of slowing down.
“It has been run by volunteers and supported by loyal regulars. “Some of the committee members have been here for decades,” Lee smiles. “They remember everything—and they still pitch in because they love this place.”
