Coronation Crafts

by Laura Storey

The local crafting group behind the creative coronation decorations...

The Colne Market Crafters have become a vital part of the local community, using their creativity to brighten up the market with beautiful handmade crafts. The group meets every Monday at the market, offering a space for people to come together, chat, and work on their projects.

Pat Carlin, the owner of the KP Crafts stall, started the group a year ago, and it has since grown into a vibrant community of crafters. Pat wanted to create a space where people could come and enjoy crafting, have a chat, and make something beautiful for the market.

The crafters have created a range of beautiful decorations for the market, from poppies for Remembrance Day to bunny bollard toppers for Easter. They also created the crocheted crown for King Charles III’s coronation.

“We started working on the crown just after Christmas,” Pat explains. “We knew the coronation was coming up, so we wanted to create something special for the market. One of our crafters, Kath, found pictures of the coronation crown and worked on replicating it as best she could.”

The crown was a huge success, drawing people to the market to see the beautiful crocheted replica.

However, the celebrations were almost spoiled when the crown was stolen from outside the market. “Thankfully, a young girl found it on Keighley Road undamaged and returned it to us. We were able to stuff it a bit and put it back out to celebrate the coronation.”

However, there was another incident where the decorations were once again stolen during the weekend of the coronation, causing disappointment and frustration for the crafters.

Despite the disappointment, the decorations have led to others in the community looking to take up crafting. The group has had people come to them who have never crocheted before, and they have been happy to teach them. Their welcoming and inclusive attitude has allowed many people to experience the joy of creating something beautiful with their own hands.
