Colne Junior Council to Visit Eco Town

The next meeting of the Junior Council is on 6th March
January’s Colne Junior Council got off to a cracking start under the chairmanship of Mia from Park Primary.
After a swift round-up of actions since the last meeting, all the arrangements were made to visit “Eco Town” at the Farington Waste Recovery Park in March, where the Council members will learn about recycling. This Facility consists of 13 streets divided into three themes: Bio, Materials and Mechanical. The council members will discover firsthand about the different processes used to sort waste so it can be recycled into something new, or even renewable energy.
Colne Junior Council is comprised of junior councillors from Christ Church, Park Primary, Primet Primary, Trawden Forest and West Street. This year, the junior councillors have mounted an ambitious campaign to collect cans for Colne’s Open Door Charity.
“Although the value fluctuates, one tonne of crushed cans will yield around £550”, said Mr Peers, Headteacher of Christ Church School. “The aim is for each school to collect at least one tonne.”
The Junior Councillors decided to promote this project by collaborating on a video on can collection and a second video on food waste collection. Trawden Forest already composts all snack waste for its award-winning school garden.
The next meeting of the Junior Council is on 6th March, and it will be attended by a Pendle Borough Council representative who will explain all the benefits that will accrue from the new Food Waste Collection Service, which will be introduced in April.
