Saving the Backdrop of Colne

by Colne Life magazine

Colne Life revisits the Lenches as Gleeson’s application to build 106 homes has been withdrawn after objections. The previous edition of Colne Life charted locals’ fight to save the Lenches.

Waterside doesn’t have a lot of access to green space,” local resident Emma Hartley commented at the time. “A lot of the residents don’t have cars. The view from the site is an iconic view, it’s the backdrop of Colne.

“When I was first told that Gleesons were going to build 212 houses opposite my house it felt like a lost cause and I thought I was a lone wolf,” Emma explains, “but local residents and members of Protect Pendle’s Countryside came round me like a pack and got a record amount of objections on the planning portal and a petition. It really feels like the community have come together to show their love for Lenches.

“The war may not be over but in this battle the victory is for Colne residents and members of Protect Pendle’s Countryside”.

“We are currently working with LCC footpaths department to get all the footpaths across the site officially recognised and we are trying to get longterm protection for Lenches by asking people to email PBC planning dept and ask for it to be made into a protected green space on the emerging local plan.” To do this, email ldf@pendle.gov.uk.

“The war may not be over but in this battle the victory is for Colne residents and members of Protect Pendle’s Countryside who have faced down a massive developer and made them withdraw their plans to concrete over one of Colne’s most iconic views.”
