Men’s mental health has been a taboo subject for too long, but the statistics are alarming, with around 84 men in the UK taking their own lives every week. That’s one man every two hours. Clearly, change is needed, and one group in Colne is taking action to make a difference.
Retired local businessman Tony Davies has helped to launch a new men’s health group called The Sheep Pen, offering a welcoming space where men can meet, work on projects together, and, if they wish, share what’s on their minds.
“Blokes rarely talk about how they’re feeling,” Tony says. “The group is a great way to encourage connection. Making things is just the means to an end, when you’re working side by side, conversation happens naturally. But there’s no pressure; some men just come along for the company, and that’s perfectly fine.
“Our group provides a place with no labels, no judgment — just good company and a purpose.”
The Sheep Pen has charitable status and is affiliated with the UK Men’s Shed Association, which began in Australia to support men’s mental health. The movement has since grown into a global network, with more Men’s Sheds opening across the UK. Each Shed provides a community workshop where men can share skills, connect with others, and improve well-being through hands-on, practical activities.
“You don’t have to be struggling to join us; it’s more about belonging and being part of something positive.”
The group has already linked up a generous donation of £600 with local social prescribers, mental health teams, and nearby Men’s Sheds in Trawden and Skipton.
Tony hopes these connections will help strengthen community spirit and highlight how positive mental health often begins with simple human contact.
“Our aim is to improve men’s wellbeing in Colne,” he says. “You don’t have to be struggling to join us, it’s more about belonging and being part of something positive.”
Looking ahead, The Sheep Pen hopes to give back to the town through small community projects, helping at local events, and even a bit of community gardening.
The Sheep Pen will meet three times a week at The Exchange Centre, behind St John’s Methodist Church on Albert Road. Sessions will run on Monday, 9.30 am-12 pm, Wednesday, 12.30 am -3 pm, and Thursday 6.30- 9 pm.
Membership costs £20 per year, with a £2 session fee to cover materials and rent. Everyone is welcome, regardless of background or walk of life.
