In the summer of 2022, Michaela Wilson from Colne Market Café launched the Pendle In and Out of School Clothes Project, an unmanned stall where parents could pick up second-hand uniforms without any stigma. Located in Colne Market, the stall provided struggling families with free uniforms for their children.
Michaela initially thought the stall would close once school resumed, but the demand for both school uniforms and other clothing continued. Now, two years later, the stall is still thriving. On the 28th of August, as Michaela continued her efforts to ensure Colne’s children were prepared for the new school year, the BBC visited Colne Market to learn more about the project, with Michaela appearing on both BBC North West Tonight and Radio Lancashire.
“People can take what they need, and no one ever knows,” she explains.
