Feeling GOOD at 81
by Chris Pearson
Gentle workouts, real results, and plenty of laughs - Feelgood Suite in Colne proves that fitness can feel good at any age.
When most people picture an 81-year-old man celebrating his birthday, they imagine cake, candles, and maybe a quiet cup of tea — not a crowd of gym-goers belting out ‘Happy Birthday’ while he’s mid-workout on a power-assisted machine. But that’s exactly how my dad, Frank, marked his big day, beaming while my mum, Jenny, cheered from the sidelines.
Tucked inside Pendle Leisure Centre on Crown Way, the Feelgood Suite isn’t your average gym. Forget pounding treadmills or clanking weights — here, Shapemaster’s power-assisted machines do the heavy lifting with you. Each one guides your body through smooth, Pilates-style movements for a workout that’s gentle but surprisingly effective. It’s ideal for anyone recovering from illness, managing mobility issues, or simply wanting to stay active without the drama (or the dumbbells).

Frank and Jenny Shaw
Frank lives with Parkinson’s and spinal stenosis, and mum has ongoing back pain. So when they were invited to try the Feelgood Suite in Colne, their expectations were, let’s say, cautious. A month later, they were converts. What began as a tentative ‘let’s give it a go’ has become a habit they don’t want to give up.
“It’s fitness without the faff — and a community that feels more like a club than a gym.”
For Dad, it’s been a revelation. “I never thought I’d say this about exercise,” he laughed, “but I actually look forward to it.” Mum agrees, “It’s gentle but effective,” she said. “I can feel the difference — and everyone’s so friendly and encouraging.”
What really sets the Feelgood Suite apart is the atmosphere. It’s bright, calm, and welcoming — the kind of place where you’re greeted with a smile and no doubt will leave with a few new friends. Sessions are supported by trained staff, and everything’s accessible, including for wheelchair users. It’s fitness without the faff — and a community that feels more like a club than a gym.
“We celebrate small wins, share a laugh, and make sure everyone leaves feeling better than when they came in.”
And at the centre of that warm, can-do energy is Leanne Ashworth, the beating heart of the place. Every community needs someone who sets the tone, and she does it effortlessly. With her background as a carer, she’s calm, upbeat, and endlessly patient — the kind of person who can make you believe you can do one more circuit, even when you’re certain you can’t.
She also understands the importance of wellbeing, and recognises the sense of routine, purpose, and belonging the Feelgood Suite brings.

Pendle Leisure Trust deserves real credit for creating a space like this. They’ve recognised that plenty of people want to stay active but find traditional gyms intimidating — and the Feelgood Suite bridges that gap brilliantly, mixing movement with motivation and a healthy dose of good humour, that lifts spirits as much as it strengthens bodies.
“Positivity is contagious,” Leanne said. “We don’t shout or count reps — we celebrate small wins, share a laugh, and make sure everyone leaves feeling better than when they came in. That’s what it’s all about.”
