Colner with a Heart of Gold

by Laura Storey

Holly donated her birthday money to Colne Open Door Centre

Most 18-year-olds spend their birthday money on a big night out or some new clothes, but local Colner Holly Atkinson she decided to donate her money to a good cause. Holly received £400 from friends and relatives on her big day. “It was such a large amount and I was trying to think of what to do with it,” Holly explains. “Then I realised that if I had to come with up with something to spend it on, it probably wasn’t going to be worthwhile.”

Instead, Holly decided that she was going to give her money to a worthwhile cause and instead of donating the money online, she wanted to provide something tangible to people who were struggling.

Holly popped to the supermarket with her friends and gathered boxes full of cereal, nappies and other essentials, spending all the money she had received before dropping it off at the Colne Open Door Centre.

“They were so pleased at the centre, they were very thankful. They said it was the first time in years that someone had made a donation like that so they were really happy with it and obviously it will go to people that really need it.”

The donation will be distributed at the centre’s food bank to families who are struggling during cost-of-living crisis.

Well done Holly!
